Casuarina Rugby Club (Cougars) was established in 1975 and is a founding member of the Northern Territory Rugby Union Inc. The Cougars were founded as a result of the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy where the main single men’s accommodation was established to house the clean up crews. As a result of the location the Club was first named Tracy Village. As the cleaning up progressed along with the enormous task of rebuilding Darwin, there were more and more service personnel and civilian contractors settling in Darwin, and as a direct consequence so did the Club in members. With the impact of rebuilding Darwin and the fact that Tracy Village was so close to the ever-growing suburb of Casuarina, it was decided that the Club should reflect the main area of conception thus being the district of Casuarina.
The Club has now been contesting Rugby in the Northern Territory for over 30 years and has produced some the NT’s best representative players. From the Cougars we have had approximately 70-80 home grown players represent the Northern Territory at both senior and junior levels. Two of those players both being Club Life Members are John Connolly and Bruce Kennon who represented the Queensland Reds with 9 caps as a brilliant & elusive back rower in the early 80’s and can boast to be only 1 of 22 players to ever beat the All Blacks in a provincial game on Australian soil. Ex Wallaby, and current Assistant Coach of the Wallabies, Jim Williams played two seasons with the Cougars back in the late 1980's. Former Wallaby and Reds coach, John Connolly played and coached the Cougars for a period of 4 years during the early 80’s.
The Club has an affiliation membership base of more than 80 registered senior players and over 100 junior registered players. The Club field’s every grade that the Northern Territory Rugby Union allows with A Grade and B Grade in the seniors and Under 5’s through to Under 17’s in the junior ranks. The Cougars also have a strong affiliation with the Stray Cats Golden Oldies Rugby Club, who helps promote and support our junior players. This, in its self, makes the Cougars one the strongest Clubs in the Darwin and Northern Territory Competition.
